Frequently asked questions
Despite the name, a sound bath does not involve water or a bath tub! Instead, your body is surrounded or “immersed in” different soothing sounds, resulting in a shifted mental and emotional state that many people find relaxing in a way that’s similar to meditation or how you feel after a yoga class, except in a sound bath you don’t need to do anything!
In a traditional sound bath experience, different Tibetan singing bowls — a type of instrument that emits different sounds based on the vibrations made by a mallet — are used. The sound isn’t necessarily the “music” but different tones and frequencies can facilitate a meditative-like state much faster than you would on your own.
Today, however, sound baths tend to include a much wider variety of instruments, including crystal bowls, drums, gongs and more.
A sound bath does not necessarily need to be a group experience. A sound bath can also be done 1:1 in a private session.
Thousands of years ago, people used chants for spiritual healing and the ancient Egyptian pyramids are even considered to be a type of sound temple. The full moon or dark moon was a popular time for this type of healing.
Research has since shown that chanting has strong physiological effects: Studies show it may improve mood and cognition, boost anti-viral activity and more.
There is lots of research about the healing benefits of sound therapy, though studies specifically on sound baths are more limited.
A study from 2016 found that people reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue and depression after doing sound meditation with a Tibetan singing bowl. Feelings of spiritual well-being also increased, and the effects were most notable among people who’d never tried sound therapy or singing bowls before.
There’s also evidence that the singing bowls can lower blood pressure and heart rate. According to Lavretsky, this is because certain sounds activate the parasympathetic nervous system — the part of the body that regulates rest —which is what causes muscles to relax, breathing to slow, and blood pressure and heart rate to lower.
